PhD Interview Questions

Here are some of the questions I was asked during my recent PhD interviews:


  1. Tell me about your research.
  2. Why is your research important?
  3. How much independence and control do you have over your work?
  4. Tell me about a paper you have read recently.
  5. Why should we be interested in rare, monogenic diseases?
  6. What is the first thing you would do in an investigation to identify the mutation that causes a monogenic disease?
  7. Why do you want to do a PhD?
  8. Why do you want to do THIS PhD?
  9. Does the scale of the work involved in completing a PhD scare you?
  10. What factors control the expression level of a particular gene?
  11. What do you think are the biggest problems which are currently holding back the field of human genetics?
  12. What job would you do if you couldn’t be a scientist?
  13. How many people have ever lived?
